NITI Aayog Plans Sunset Policy For Public Transport To Go Electric
The Centre’s policy think tank, the Niti Aayog is proposing setting deadlines for state transport undertakings (STUs) to convert a certain percentage of their fleet to electric vehicles (EVs), reports The Financial Express. An official of the Aayog said that while it would refrain from coming out with an EV policy, it would let market economics determine whether people wanted to switch to EVs or retain a fuel-powered car.
Stating that India did not need an EV policy, but a “behavioural change”, the official added that the Centre was looking at encouraging domestic manufacturing of EVs.
We may like to tell states that their carbon footprints must be minimised. We are considering of giving some targets to state public transporters to deploy certain percentage of electric vehicles in their new orders.An official of the Niti Aayog
India currently has fewer than 1.5 lakh EVs, and the number expected to grow to 5 per cent of the total vehicle fleet over the next five years.
Of the 24 million vehicles sold in India in 2017-18, 1 per cent of them were EVs.
