BySwarajya Staff

Over 1.25 crore passengers were carried by domestic Indian airlines during the month of November 2019. This number represents a healthy 11.2 per cent growth in a year on year basis, reports Mint.

According to the Directorate General Of Civil Aviation (DGCA) these growth numbers are the fastest since December last year.

Airlines such as Spicejet and Indigo registered a robust increase in passenger traffic. The former carried 20.8 lakh passengers up 42 per cent year on year, with Indigo carrying 61.5 lakh passengers, up by 23 per cent.

While market shares for airlines have definitely gone up since the beginning of 2019 given the exit of Jet Airways from the market. This has also helped airlines increase their passenger load factors (PLFs), a metric very critical for their profitability.

Indigo, Spicejet and GoAir registered PLFs in excess of 90 per cent with others posting a healthy 80 per cent and above.

October too had seen a healthy growth of 3.98 per cent year on year in air passenger traffic. Over 1.23 crore passengers took to the skies in October compared to over 1.18 crore passengers in the same month last year.

InterGlobe Aviation Ltd owned IndiGo similarly continued to dominate the skies with a commanding 47.4 per cent share of the domestic passenger market.

Go Air got the plaudits for the best on time performance and SpiceJet won the race for passenger load factor.
