Not Sure About Indian Passport, But The Driving Licence Is Definitely Getting Stronger

BySwarajya Staff

Several nations including the United States of America, Germany, Australia and South Africa are allowing Indian tourists to drive vehicles in their countries with an Indian driving licence, Times Of India has reported.

“India and Australia have similar basic road rules. Both nations drive on the left-hand side of the road, and the cars are of right-hand drive variety, making it easier for Indians to plan a self-drive holiday in Australia. In most Australian states and territories except Northern Territory, you are able to drive on an overseas licence as long as it is current, and in English,” Tourism Australia’s country manager Nishant Kashikar told Times of India. If the tourist does not have an English translation, it has to be accompanied by an English translation.

Debolin Sen of Cox and Kings told TOI that most of the American states accept an Indian driving licence if it is in English and valid. It should be accompanied by the I-94 document that carries the date of entry to the US. In France, the Indian driving licence must be accompanied by a French translation. Germany, New Zealand and Switzerland are other nations which recognise an Indian driving licence.
