Now Track Your IRCTC Food’s Journey Too: Indian Railways To Add Barcodes With CCTV Feed Of Preparation And Packaging

BySwarajya Staff

Railways Minister Piyush Goyal, while inaugurating the ‘Rail Drishti Dashboard’ to promote transparency and accountability, said that the Railway Ministry is planning to introduce bar codes on food packets, reports Financial Express.

The move would enable railway passengers to keep a check on the quality of food items that are served to them, Goyal was quoted saying by FE.

The introduction of barcodes, according to the ministry, is to provide a better quality of food to railway passengers. Through this, passengers could scan the code and watch the live footage of the IRCTC kitchen, where the food item was prepared.

In addition to it, the railway passengers will also get details of date and time when the food item was prepared and packaged.

Goyal recently launched an online portal called the Rail Drishti Dashboard, where users can access information related to passenger trains, freight trains, live stream videos of IRCTC kitchens, get rail time table, railway heritage details, etc.

Through the portal, railway users can view live feeds from the CCTV cameras installed at various IRCTC base kitchens and take a look at how the food is prepared and packed.

The live feeds are be currently available for Ahmedabad, Balasore, Renigunta, Sealdah, Kota, Mumbai BCT, Mumbai CSMT, Guntakal, Jhansi, Katihar, Katpadi, Noida, Pune, Vijayawada railway stations.

Apart from live feeds, IRCTC is also reportedly making use of bio-degradable packaging materials for food and an artificial intelligence-enabled software that checks anomalies in kitchens such as cooking without gloves, head-caps, the presence of rodents etc. through HD CCTV cameras.
