State-run Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) has been awarded a Rs 6,311 crore contract to build eight Anti Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Crafts (ASWSWC), reports Mint.
GRSE emerged as a successful bidder for the design, construction and supply of the eight crafts among various defence public sector unit (PSU) shipyards and other Indian private shipyards after Indian Navy issued a request for proposals (RFP) in April 2014.
The first of the anti-submarine vessels is expected to be delivered within 42 months from the date of signing the contract and the remaining ships in 84 months, which is at the rate of two deliveries per year.
ASWSWCs have a deep displacement of 750 tons and can reach speeds of 25 knots and complement of 57. These craft are also capable of full-scale subsurface surveillance of coastal waters along with coordinated anti-submarine warfare operations with aircraft.
They can intercept and destroy subsurface targets in coastal waters and can be deployed for search and rescue missions by day and night.
The GRSE since its inception in 1960, has been a pioneer warship builder for the nation and has developed 100 warships till date, highest in the country. The company is also currently manufacturing three stealth frigates, anti-submarine warfare corvettes and four survey vessels (large) for the Indian Navy.
