The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), which represents 57 member states that has Muslims as its majority population totalling about 180 crore people, has criticised Indian Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the Indian Supreme Court judgment on Ayodhya land dispute case, reports The Hindu.
In a statement, the general secretariat of the Saudi based OIC, said, “It was closely following recent developments affecting Muslim minority in India.” OIC is also the world’s second-largest intergovernmental organisation after the United Nations.
The statement invoked the UN charter against discrimination and said, “The OIC reiterates its call to ensure the safety of the Muslim minority and the protection of Islamic holy places in India.”
“In this regard, any action, contrary to these principles and obligations, may lead to further tensions and may have serious implications on peace and security across the region,” it read.
“The General Secretariat of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (#OIC) has been following recent developments affecting Muslim minority in #India. It expresses its concern over the recent developments pertaining to both the issue of citizenship rights & the #BabriMasjid case (sic)“ OIC said in a tweet.
However, the Islamic organisation is very much silent on human rights violation in Balochistan which is fighting for its freedom from the Sunni Punjabi Muslim-dominated Pakistan.
Also, there was ubiquitous silence on China and its treatment of Uyghur Muslims. In the Abu Dhabi declaration passed by OIC, the Islamic organisation said, “We commend the efforts of the People’s Republic of China in providing care to its Muslim citizens,” which was a vindication for China when there is overwhelming evidence that over 10 lakh Uyghur Muslims are in concentration camps.
In all international forums, China has called these camps as “re-education camps” and according to the communists party, the camps help “to educate and save the local people of Xinjiang who were influenced by religious extremism.”
OIC has treaded carefully with China because of its industrial strength, scales of economy and rapid influence in global affairs and more importantly its seat in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
However with India, home to the world’s second largest Muslim population which has democracy and a secular constitution, OIC still supports resolutions against India under the influence of Pakistan.
