Padma Shri Awardee Midwife Sulagitti Narasamma Who Helped Deliver Over 15,000 Babies, Passes Away Aged 98

Well known social worker Sulagitti Narasamma who over the course of her life helped deliver more than 15,000 babies passed away today (25 December) aged 98, ANI has reported.

Narasamma helped scores of mothers deliver babies in Krishnapura which is a remote village in Karnataka’s Pavagada taluk. He efforts received national recognition in 2018 when she was awarded the Padma Shri by the Indian government.

As reported by the New Indian Express, Narasamma was admitted to the Siddaganga Hospital and Research Centre in Tumakuru on 29 November. She was later referred to BGS Hospital for chronic lung disease. She was kept on a ventilator for the last five days but sadly could not recover.

Survived by four sons, she is best known for extending free of cost midwife services to women. It is believed that she learned the art from her grandmother.

As per her son Pavagada Sriram who is an activist, the administration would decide over the final rites as she would be accorded state honours.
