Pakistan army Chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa service extension has been suspended by the Pakistan Supreme Court on Tuesday (26 November), reports Newsweek Pakistan.

According to reports, Chief Justice of Pakistan Asif Saeed Khosa has suspended till Wednesday the notification issued by the Imran Khan government, extending the tenure of the Army chief for another three years.

The development adds volatility to the charged up political atmosphere in Pakistan where troubles have encircled the Imran Khan government on many fronts. There are reports of friction between the Army and the government.

The decision was taken by a three-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Khosa and the apex court was hearing a petition filed by the Jurist Foundation, which called the extension illegal.

The chief justice said, “Only the President of Pakistan can extend the tenure of the Army chief.”

However Attorney General Anwar Mansoor Khan said, “The Army chief’s tenure had not been extended without securing President Arif Alvi’s approval and it has been approved by the federal cabinet.”

Notices have been issued to all parties involved, including General Bajwa and the defence ministry, for the next hearing scheduled for tomorrow (27 November).
