The government will extend highway radio services on national highways across 13 states as part of phase two of a World Bank funded project to provide real-time traffic updates to commuters.

Phase one of the pilot project on Highway Advisory Services was implemented on Delhi-Jaipur NH-8 under the World Bank Technical Assistance programme, said Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said in Lok Sabha on Thursday. Under phase one, which was implemented from 10 March to 10 October last year, real-time traffic updates of duration five minutes each was provided in 18 bulletins every day through All India Radio stations in Delhi, Alwar and Jaipur.

Information provided included traffic congestion, accidents, toll plaza waiting times, weather conditions, road diversions and road safety education according to the minister. Gadkari said the ministry has commissioned an independent study to evaluate the impact of the pilot project and the preliminary findings of the study are encouraging.
