During his Bahrain visit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally launch the renovation project of the 200-year-old Shri Krishna temple in the Bahraini capital, reports Hindustan Times.

PM Modi, in the first ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Kingdom, will arrive in Bahrain on Saturday (24 August) on a two-day visit. He will launch the renovation of the Shreenathji (Shri Krishna) temple in Manama, the capital of Bahrain.

In an official statement on Thursday (22 August), PM Modi had said that during his visit to Bahrain, he will be “blessed to be present at the formal beginning of the re-development of  the temple of Shreenathji- the oldest in the Gulf region – in the wake of the auspicious festival of Janmashtami,”

The temple will be renovated at a cost of $4.5 million. The three-storeyed structure is being built on a 45,000 sq feet land, and will have 80 per cent more capacity to host devotees, according to Bob Thaker, President of the Thattai Hindu Merchants Community. A special facility will also be there to accommodate the priests, he said.

According to the report, the temple will also have a facility to host Hindu weddings - in line with the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority’s initiative to make the kingdom a hub for Indian weddings.

“There will also be a knowledge centre and a museum attached to the temple,” said Thacker.
