Rahi Sarnobat Wins Thrilling Shootout To Give India Its First Asian Games Gold Medal In Women Shooting

Shooter Rani Sarnobat gave India its first gold medal in women’s shooting at the ongoing Asian games by winning the 25m pistol event on Wednesday (22 August), Indian Express has reported.

The 27-year-old shooter faced off in a thrilling double shoot-off with Thailand’s Naphaswan Yangpaiboon. In the first shoot-off round both the shooters scored 4 out of 5 but Sarnobat prevailed in the second game.

Earlier in the game, she had scored an Asian Games record tally of 34 on the way to clinch the gold medal.

Sarnobat hails from Kolhapur in Maharashtra and is coached by Mongolian-German sports shooter Munkhbayar Dorjsuren.

This event though ended up being a bittersweet one for India as promising shooter Manu Bhaker finished sixth with a score of 16 points. She had shot an Asian Games record score of 593 in the qualifiers round.

In other news, India’s men and women Hockey teams are bossing their respective events. Earlier today (Wednesday) the men’s hockey team routed Hong Kong 26-0. Similarly the women’s hockey team had notched a 21-0 victory over Kazakhstan on Tuesday (21 August).

India currently stands sixth in the medal tally with four golds, three silvers and four bronze medals.
