After reports emerged of Rahul Gandhi offering to resign from the post Congress president at today’s (25 May) meeting of the party’s working committee in New Delhi, senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala has denied the same, reports India Today.
Surjewala said that the working committee has not taken any decision regarding Gandhi leaving his position. Several senior Congress leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Captain Amarinder Singh, Sheila Dixit, among others were present at the working committee’s meeting.
The meeting follows the Congress party’s poor showing in the recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, in which it was only a able to secure 52 seats, as against the ruling party’s 303. At a press conference in the evening of 23 May, Rahul Gandhi had taken full responsibility for his party’s debacle.
The party president had conceded defeat and also congratulated BJP leader Smriti Irani, who had beaten him in his family stronghold of Amethi.
In the aftermath of the results, the heads of three state units of the party had also submitted their resignations to Gandhi, including Raj Babbar from Uttar Pradesh.
