Lok Sabha MP and Trinamool Congress leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay was arrested today (3 January) by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in connection with the Rose Valley chit fund scam. Bandyopadhyay, who was called for questioning by the CBI in December, didn’t show up, claiming he had to attend Parliament.
The Rose Valley scam is reported to be seven times bigger than the Rs 2,460 crore Saradha chit fund scam. Rose Valley owner Gautam Kundu and several others have been behind bars for over a year now.
The Trinamool Congress claimed that the arrest was a display of “vendetta politics” by the ruling National Democratic Alliance at the centre. Leader of the Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter to claim that the arrest was made without any reason, and blamed it on the demonetisation exercise of the central government.
The Bharatiya Janata Party office in Kolkata has also reportedly come under attack from the students wing of the TMC after the arrest.
Some pictures have also emerged from the attack on the BJP office in Kolkata.
