Rohith Vemula’s Mother Accuses Muslim League Of Using Her For Political Gains After Making False Promises

The mother of research scholar Rohith Vemula, who committed suicide two years ago, has made some serious allegations against Indian Union Muslim League (IUML).

She has reportedly said that the IUML promised her huge financial help soon after Vemula died, but only used her for political gains and gave her little in return.

Radhika Vemula told The News Minute that the party members approached her soon after Vemula hung himself from his hostel room and promised her Rs 20 lakh for a house. The Vemula family stay in a rented accommodation.

She further told the portal that the party took her to Kerala and made her participate in a meeting with a huge gathering of around 40,000 people. She was subsequently taken to Kerala and other places a number of times for similar meetings.

Radhika said that while her presence helped the party, she never received what she was promised. On one occasion, the party gave her two cheques of Rs. 2.5 lakh each but one of them bounced, she alleged.

“In such a context, how can use they make promises and use it for political gain?" she told the portal.

In their defense, Subair, the youth wing of the party, told the portal that they have set aside Rs 15 lakh for the Vemula family and won’t step back from the promise.

Rohith’s suicide on the campus of the University of Hyderabad in January 2016 - shortly after he was expelled from his hostels over charges of indiscipline - sparked a massive row across the country with a section of media and activists calling it a case of atrocities against Dalits.

An inquiry by the Andhra Pradesh government, however, declared Vemula as belonging to the Other Backward Class and not a Dalit. Earlier, an inquiry by Justice Roopanwal Commission had also stated that Rohith was not a Dalit. The commission’s report had also concluded that no one else was responsible for Rohith’s death.
