As much as 57 per cent of the regular employees are earning less than Rs 10,000 per month, according to the ‘State of Working India’ report published by Azim Premji University, Mint has reported. The report also said that people earning Rs 50,000 or more constitute just 1.6 per cent of the Indian workforce.

“The key measure of the quality of jobs is, perhaps, how remunerative they are. Broadly speaking, wage levels have remained low and have grown slowly over the last three decades,” the report said. However, it added that real wages grew in every sector.

The average monthly salary of regular workers was Rs 13,562 and non-regular workers earned Rs 5,853 per month. The report said that low wages could be one of the reasons for the high demand for government jobs. It also said that the service sector was key for generating jobs as it had seen the highest growth in wages between 2011 and 2015.
