Russia on Friday (8 May) has recorded 10,699 new coronavirus cases, marking the sixth straight day with more than 10,000 positive tests.

The new cases took the overall number of cases in the country to 187,859, reports Hindustan Times.

A government tally showed 10,669 new cases over the last 24 hours, fewer than Thursday’s (6 May) record of 11,231 and bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 187,859.

Russia also recorded 98 new deaths from the virus, raising the death toll in the country to a total of 1,723.

Russia now ranks fourth in Europe in terms of the total number of cases, according to John Hopkins University’s data, behind countries where the epidemic hit considerably earlier: Britain, Italy and Spain.

Moscow has emerged as the epicentre of the disease in Russia. Even though the government closed the borders of the capital in the initial phase, there are more than 92,600 cases in Moscow, as on Friday.
