Save Aarey Activist Hugs Tree Which BMC Has No Plans Of Cutting Down

BySwarajya Staff

A “Save Aarey” activist was captured by media organisations hugging a tree in a reported bid to save it from being cut down. The tree though is not on the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s list of trees to be felled.

In the images posted by ANI, the activist can be seen morosely hugging a tree in presence of various police officials. Such a protest was seen being synonymous with the Chipko Movement spearheaded by Sunderlal Bahuguna.

Alert twitter users though soon pointed out that the tree number 614 which the activist was hugging is not on BMC’s felling list.

As per the notice issued by Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s tree authority the tree number 613 and 614 are not on the removal list. Here is a copy of the letter addressed to the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation.

The Bombay High Court on Friday (4 October) dismissed all petitions against the clearing of 2,700 trees in the Aarey colony. The cleared area would be used to house a carshed for Mumbai Metro.
