Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, embracing her new role as Congress’s new general secretary for Uttar Pradesh East, launched her political campaign for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections with a roadshow running from the Lucknow airport to the Congress headquarters in the city, reports India Today.
Unfortunately for the party, many participants fell victim to pickpocketers who made the best of the opportunity and stole as many as 50 phones.
Priyanka was joined by her brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who called for the removal of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from power in the state.
Congress workers took hold of one man who was suspected of being involved in the thefts, but police had to let him go since no phones were recovered from him.
An official complaint has also been registered at the Sarojini Nagar police station.
Among the victims of the theft were Congress leaders, including Assistant City Magistrate of the state and Congress spokesperson Jeeshan Haider.
This rally marked the first time Priyanka campaigned beyond the traditional bastions of the Gandhi family in Amethi and Raebareli.
The Congress is betting on Priyanka to raise its tally in Uttar Pradesh, which was swept by the BJP in the last general elections.
