Though AI May Not Yet Treat You, It Can Suggest The Best Strategy, Says Report

Researchers at the Imperial College London have developed new a technology that was found to predict the best strategy for treatment of patients. The study, whose conclusions were published in the journal Natural Medicine has stated that AI (Artificial Intelligence) machines were found to be better than human doctors at suggesting reliable treatments.

In the experiment carried out by the researchers, the AI system ‘learnt’ the most effective treatment strategy to treat a patient after analysing the hospital records of about 100,000 patients and the decisions of every single doctor that handled those patients. The study was conducted to find the most appropriate treatment for Sepsis, a potentially fatal infection that results in more than 40,000 people in the UK (United Kingdom) alone.

Dr Aldo Faisal, a senior author of the study, said that “Sepsis is one of the biggest killers in the UK - and claims six million lives worldwide - so we desperately need new tools at our disposal to help patients. At Imperial, we believe that AI for Healthcare is the solution.”

The study’s authors also suggested that this new tool could be improved upon and could be used by doctors to decide on the best course of action to treat different medical complications.
