The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Bengaluru Police has arrested Sameerullah, a timber merchant from the Muslim-dominated Tilak Nagar area of the cit, for posting a video of a crowded OPD in Bihar and passing it off as that of scene from city’s Victoria Hospital, Deccan Herald reported.
Sameerullah was booked under the Information Technology Act, the National Disaster Management Act and under IPC section 505 (statements conducting to public mischief).
Sameerullah uploaded a video on his Facebook page(Saif Ads) on Saturday night which showed hundreds of panic stricken patients congregating in a small space inside a hospital, and the person shooting the video expressing grave concern that it is a threat to medical staff and patients. Sameerullah claimed that it was a scene from Victoria Hospital in Bengalur but the video was actually of a hospital in Bihar.
After the video was widely shared on social media, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) took up a suo motu case and swiftly tracked down Sameerullah.
During police investigation, Sameerullah claimed that he had received the video on WhatsApp, and the sender had said it was Victoria Hospital, and that he posted it without verifying.
Sameerullah is said to be a Congress party worker from South Bengaluru. His Facebook page has several pictures of him with leading politicians of Congress party and of his participation at political events. His Facebook profile also claims that he is connected Kannada film industry.
JCP (Crime) Sandeep Patil said, “The video which went viral about Victoria Hospital is fake, and has no link to Victoria Hospital or any hospital in Karnataka. People should be careful not to share or forward any false video or message about the pandemic.”
