Today’s Special: A Partial Solar Eclipse, But Not Observable In India 

The first eclipse of 2019, a partial one, took place today (January 6) at 5 am IST. Though not visible in India, it was seen in parts of Northeast Asia and North Pacific, reports Indian Express.

While an eclipse takes place when the Sun, Moon and Earth are aligned in a straight line, a partial eclipse happens when all three don't align in a straight line, but the Moon casts its penumbra (outer part of the shadow) on Earth. Temperatures drop, and it turns dark since the Sun is completely blocked.

According to the UTC ( Co-ordinated Universal Time), the partial solar eclipse will take place on January 6, starting from 23:34:08 and ending at 03:48:46 UTC. According to IST, it took place from 5 am to 9.18 am on January 6.

Though not visible in India, it was viewed by parts of Eastern Asia, including Siberia, Mongolia, northeast China, Japan and Korea. The eclipse was also seen from North Pacific Ocean, as well as southwest Alaska.
