Towards Judicial Accountability: ‘Justice Clocks’ At All High Courts Soon

BySwarajya Staff

Towards its aim to increase the efficiency of the judicial process in India, the central government is all set to install ‘Justice Clocks’ in all the 24 High Courts (HCs) in the country, Financial Express has reported.

Following up on an idea floated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November last year, these clocks will display the number of pending cases in the court, the cases disposed off by the court daily and the individual rank of the court based on the rate.

One such clock is already installed in the Justice Department’s office in New Delhi and will now be installed in the all the High Courts as well. Lower courts will get their justice clocks later as well. The government hopes that the public awareness created by the measure will increase judicial efficiency.

Judicial accountability and efficiency is a subject of debate in the country where the judicial process is known to be long and tiresome. Hence the government wants the courts to compete with each other in disposing off the cases so as to make the process more friendly towards the citizens.
