Global car manufacturer Toyota’s plant in Bidadi, Karnataka has been declared its greenest manufacturing unit, Livemint has reported. This plant was judged the greenest out of a total 56 manufacturing units run by the country across the globe.

According to the report, at least 68 per cent of the total energy required by the Indian plant is generated via renewable energy sources like wind and solar which are either produced in-house or sourced externally. This 68 per cent green energy translates to 56 million units of annual energy consumption.

In the rankings, Toyota’s plant in France came a distant second by generating 35 per cent of its energy via renewable means.

Toyota manufactures its vehicles in India via its subsidiary Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd, wherein the Kirloskar group is a minority owner.

As per Toyota Kirloskar’s senior vice-president Raju B Ketkale, the Bidadi unit is now a model plant for the company’s worldwide operations. He claimed that the plant now plans to add 7 megawatts of renewable capacity by 2020 which will take the share of renewable energy to 80 per cent.

In the financial year, 2017-18 Toyota Kirloskar manufactured a total of 152,000 units at the Bidadi plant.
