Donald Trump Slams London Mayor Sadiq Khan For Playing Down Terror Threat

BySwarajya Staff

US President Donald Trump has launched another Twitter attack on the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, criticising him for the second day in a row in the wake of the deadly attack that left seven people dead and dozens injured.

On Sunday, Trump had criticised Khan for saying that there was no reason for Londoners to be alarmed. “At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and mayor of London says there is no reason to be alarmed,” Trump said on Twitter.

However, Khan rejected Trump’s statement, saying that he was quoted out of context. It's being touted that he was referring specifically to "a visible increase in police activity on the streets of London in the wake of the attack."

"Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. There's no reason to be alarmed,” Khan had said.

Trump lashed out at the Khan again on Monday and accused him of making a "pathetic excuse" over one of his comments following the terrorist attack.

"Pathetic excuse by Sadiq Khan who had to think fast on his 'no reason to be alarmed' statement. Mainstream media is working hard to sell it!", Trump said.

The mayor hit back Monday night, accusing the President of 'fuelling division' and insisting he did not have 'time' to respond in full. A spokesman for Sadiq Khan said the mayor had “more important things to do than respond to Donald Trump’s ill-informed tweet that deliberately takes out of context his remarks”.

The White House on Monday denied suggestions from reporters that Trump "picked a fight" with Khan “because he was Muslim. To suggest something like that is utterly ridiculous," deputy White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said.
