A British general practitioner, Dr Keith Wolverson is under investigation by the country’s General Medical Council (GMC) over allegations of racial discrimination for requesting a Muslim woman to remove her face veil while speaking to him so that she would be more audible, reports Metro.
The woman whose face was covered a Niqab, did not have a problem with showing her face but the complaint against the doctor was later on filed by her husband. Since then, Dr Wolverson has been forced out of his job and could possibly even face the cancellation of his medical license if he is found guilty in the GMC’s investigation.
‘Unfortunately I’m not able to work at the moment as I’m a locum GP and no-one will employ you while you’re under investigation by the GMC,” he said.
As per GMC guidelines a medical practitioner has to remover her own veil if the patient finds it tough to communicate due to it, but for the reverse situation there are norms that are prescribed. Dr Wolverson asserts that the issue is not about race or religion, but simply a matter of clarity of communication. An online petition has been launched by people supporting the doctor.
