The Uttar Pradesh government would set up 218 fast-track courts to deal with cases related to crimes against women and children, said Law Minister Brijesh Pathak. The decision was taken by the state cabinet, here on Monday (9 December).
Of these, 144 courts will hear cases of crimes against women, and 74 pertaining to crimes against children.
The fast-track courts would cost around Rs 75 lakh per court. In districts where the courts didn't have spacious buildings, spaces would be hired for new courts, he said.
The state has 42,389 pending cases of sexual offences against children and 25,749 cases of rape and sexual crimes against women.
