UP Police On FIR: Soon, Just Call In To Register Your Complaint

BySwarajya Staff

The Uttar Pradesh Police is all set to go digital in its First Information Report (FIR) filing process, reports Outlook. Now, it will offer a dial-FIR service, where the common man can register regular crimes without going to a police station. The department is also in the process of preparing an online photographic dossier of criminals which will be given to police officers, who shall be supplied with 22,000 iPads for better law enforcement.

Also on the cards is a tighter and more robust terror combat team, with over 100 commandos scheduled to be given specialised training. In a novel initiative, there shall be a maiden batch of women personnel too, Director-General of Police O P Singh told the media.

The DGP said that as the department was getting over 22,000 distress calls every day on its 100 helpline, it worked on ideas to make registering FIRs, the most fundamental step before an investigation is launched, hassle-free.

The most common crimes, such as vehicle theft, can be registered by phone, instead of coming to a police station, he said.

Before this idea was announced, a two-month pilot project was conducted in Ghaziabad, Singh said.

The roll-out of this service shall coincide with the launch of various citizen-centric services by way of mobile applications.

Only Punjab, other than UP now, has an online photographic dossier of criminals.
