Vehicles Costing Over Rs 12 Lakh To No Longer Be Sold To Armed Forces Officers At CSD Canteens

BySwarajya Staff

As per a new policy to be implemented at the Canteen Stores Department (CSD) ,defence officers will no longer be able to purchase higher end vehicles at discounted prices anymore, with a cap of Rs 12 lakh being set on subsidised four-wheelers, reports The Times of India.

Moreover, the new policy also entails that purchases of new vehicles at discounted prices will be restricted to one every eight years, with this rule being applicable to both serving and retired officers.

The engine capacity has also been restricted to a maximum of 2,500 CC, as per the rule promulgated by by the Army’s Quarter Master General (QMG).

The cap of Rs 12 lakh however excludes GST. Other ranks will be allowed to purchase vehicles with a maximum capacity of 1400 CC, with a price cap of Rs 5 lakh. Their purchases will however be restricted to once in service and once after retirement.

Army officers have not taken kindly to the new directives. “The new orders are illogical. Earlier, there were no restrictions on the price or engine capacity, and officers could buy new cars once every four-five years. Yes, there was some misuse but the monitoring system needed to be strengthened instead of such blanket orders,” said a brigadier.
