GSLV MK III carrying the communication satellite took off from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota at 5.08 pm today (14 November) with the countdown for the launch having begun at 2.30 pm.

The GSLV MKIII D2 is the Indian space agency’s heaviest launch vehicle and has a different architecture and double the payload carrying capacity compared to its predecessors. This mission gains significance as the launch vehicle will now be declared operational (post the successful launch) and will join other operational vehicles such as PSLV and GSLV.

GSAT-29 is a communication satellite weighing 3423 kg. The spacecraft will be located at 55°E longitude and is designed for a mission life of 10 years.
