BySwarajya Staff

The Indian Railways on Thursday (20 September) test ran an engine along with a coach on the Bogibeel bridge which is India’s longest roal-rail bridge, NE Now has reported.

The trial run was carried on one of the tracks from north to the south bank. Earlier the railways had also run a trolley across the bridge.

A video of the test run was shared on twitter:

The bridge - second longest in Asia by some accounts - is 4.94 km long and 32 metres above the water level of the Brahmaputra river. It has three-lane roads on top and double line rail in the lower section. Its design, based on a sea-crossing bridge that links Sweden and Denmark.

This bridge will connect Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Currently to journey between Dibrugarh and Arunachal via train one needs to travel via Guwahati with more than 500 km in a detour. After the bridge opens reportedly at the end of the year, the journey will be less than 100 km.
