Coming down strongly on the Trinamool-led government of West Bengal, the Supreme Court today questioned why its order directing the release of BJP youth wing convener for West Bengal, Priyanka Sharma, was not given effect immediately, reports ANI.
Today (15 May) morning, upon being informed of the delay in releasing Sharma, the apex court also threatened to issue a contempt notice against the state government if its order was not followed.
The BJP youth leader’s actual release took place only at 9.40 am today, as per the representation of the West Bengal government’s counsel.
The Supreme Court questioned, “Why she was not released immediately?”
Moreover, Sharma’s counsel N K Kaul informed the apex court that Sharma was only released after being forced to sign an apology letter by police officials.
Sharma had been languishing in prison after being taken into custody by the state police for creating a meme with Mamata Banerjee’s face on it. Her arrest was widely condemned as an assault on the democratic right to freedom of speech and expression.
