In a shocking turn of events, Lebanon’s contestant in the Miss Earth competition, Salwa Akar, has been stripped of her title and denied the right to represent her country in the finals of the beauty pageant in the Philippines on 3 November. Her only fault: Taking a picture along with the contestant from Israel, reports RT.
Akar tried to talk her way out of the faux pas, according to Egyptian newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm, by contesting that the other contestant had spoken to her in Arabic but did not work as both the contestants were wearing tags with the names of their countries written.
Akar tremained calm and collected despite the recent developments, and in a statement released by her on her Facebook page, she says she will finish what she started.
Lebanon is one of the few Arab nations, in which any sort of associations with the Israelis may have extreme repercussions. A year ago, Miss Lebanon Emigrant, Amanda Hanna, was stripped of her title over a visit to Israel. Also, in 2015, Miss Lebanon, Sally Greige, was challenged over a selfie with Miss Israel, Doron Matalon, taken amidst the Miss Universe pageant in Miami.
Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
