A truck slammed into a crowded Christmas market in central Berlin on Monday night, killing at least 12 people and wounding 48, in what authorities are investigating as a possible terrorist attack.

Several local media reported that the driver, who was arrested shortly after near the Victory Column monument, was a Pakistani national. He is said to have arrived as a refugee in Germany in February, EFE news agency reported.

German Federal Minister of the Interior Thomas de Maiziere, who made a statement just after midnight, however, refused to label the brutal incident a terrorist attack. Although he acknowledged that "a lot points in that direction".

The US intelligence agencies had earlier issued notices for its citizens cautioning them of possible terror threats at Christmas markets across the Europe.
