Chinese-made globes being sold in leading Canadian stores depict the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) as a ‘disputed area’ and Arunachal Pradesh as a part of China, Hindustan Times has reported.

The issue came to light after Indian-origin customers, shocked by the discrepancy, posted pictures of the ‘Made in China’ globes available in multiple multinational retail chains throughout the country.

The globes show J&K - including the part occupied by Pakistan - as disputed territory, while depicting the part under illegal Chinese occupation as a part of China.

The state of Arunachal Pradesh, which Beijing lays claim to and calls ‘South Tibet’, is also depicted as a part of China.

The issue has also been raised by the Overseas Friends of Bharatiya Janata Party. The organisation, on 12 December 2017, called on Canadian retailers to withdraw the Chinese-made globes.

In a tweet on 15 December, the organisation informed that one of the Canadian retail stores, where the Chinese-made globe was available, has removed the product.

National Alliance of Indo-Canadians (NAIC) has also raised the issue, asking stores to stop the sale of the product.

“An inaccurate depiction of the map on the globe defeats its educational purpose for a student,” NAIC President Azad Kaushik has said.

“A country can now freely engage in a veiled war through business and trade practices by influencing young minds with long-term consequences. The manipulation of a map on an educational globe is but an example of a new kind of war through business in a globalised world,” he added.
