Congress leader Aslam Sher Khan announced on Wednesday his intentions to launch a an outfit similar to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to steer the Congress ahead of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the upcoming assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

The former hockey player has revealed that he will name the outfit ‘Rashtriya Congress Swayamsevak Sangh’ and will make sure that the Congress, which has become devoid of workers at the grassroots-level, reconnects with the people.

Khan said the parties that depend solely on minority votes can’t survive this phase and therefore require a support structure.

On being asked why the Congress needs a support structure when the party already has the Seva Dal which predates RSS, he said that the organisation became “almost non-existent” after India’s independence.

“Five minutes before the semi-final of the 1975 Hockey World Cup ended, I was sent on the field and I scored the equaliser... The situation of Congress is the same as that of India in that match," said Khan, adding that the organisation will prove to be the "equaliser" in the upcoming assembly elections.

Interestingly, the Congress has often called the RSS ‘fascist’ and has equated its ideology to that of the Islamic State.
