Delhi: AAP MLA Convicted For Causing Ruckus, Locking Police Officers Inside Polling Station, May Get Jailed

AAP MLA Manoj Kumar has been convicted by a local Delhi court over causing ruckus and locking police officers at a polling centre in East Delhi’s Kalyan Puri area during the 2013 Assembly Elections, Press Trust of India has reported.

Kumar the incumbent MLA from East Delhi's Kondli constituency was being tried for obstructing election process has been convicted under sections reserved for “obstructing a public servant in discharge of public functions” and “disorderly conduct near polling booths”.

The arguments over the quantum of punishment to be meted out to Kumar would be heard by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Samar Vishal on 25 June. The AAP MLA is liable to be fined and/or jailed for a maximum of three months.

The case pertains to Kumar and 50 of his supporters creating a ruckus outside the main gate of an MCD school. The mob later also locked the school’s main gate while the voting was in progress, which resulted in police officials, voters and election officers getting locked inside.

The AAP MLA and his supporters also continued their agitation after the voting was over and did not allow the EVM boxes to be taken outside the booth.
