A specially constituted team of CB-CID officials today (May 30) arrested a DMK lady funcionary and her husband in the gruesome triple murder of former Tirunelveli Corporation Mayor and senior DMK leader Uma Maheswari, her husband Murugasankaran and housemaid Mari, Daily Thanthi reported.
DMK functionary Seeniammal and her husband Sannasi (a PWD retired Engineer) were arrested today in Karisalkulam in Madurai. They were later produced before the Judicial Magistrate in Tirunelveli District Court.
Seeniammal is currently the deputy secretary of DMK’s Adi Dravidar wing.
In a ghastly triple murder that sent shock waves across Tamil Nadu, former Tirunelveli mayor and DMK leader Uma Maheswari, her husband and domestic help were brutally hacked to death at their residence in Melapalayam on July 23, 2019.
The police initally probed the triple murder as a case of crime committed possibly for pecuniary gain. However ‘party ticket’ and property dispute angle emerged as the investigation progressed .
The police had initally detained Karthikeyan, son of Seeniammal and Sannasi for the murder.
Karthikeyan confessed during the inquiry that he had commited the murder as he was furious with Uma Maheswari serving as a stumbling block for the ascent of his mother’s political career. Karthikeyan has now rreportedely confessed that his parents instigated him to commit the crime.
According to the police, Karthikeyan was in touch with his parents before and after the murder through his mobile phone.
Seeniammal and her husband Sannasi were reportedly in the police radar after credible evidence emerged on financial disputes with the former Mayor.
The police investigation had also thrown up a financial transaction between Maheshwari’s slain husband Murugasankaran and a person from Sankarankoil.
Seeniammal was was a political rival of Uma Maheshwari.
Uma Maheshwari served as the mayor of the Tirunelveli Corporation between 1996 to 2001. She was also fielded by DMK in the 2011 assembly election from Sankarankoil assembly segment but lost.
