Imran Khan Seeks Debt Waiver For Pakistan As Coronavirus Cases Rise In The Country

BySwarajya Staff

The Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has called for a debt waiver for his country due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, reports Hindustan Times.

During the interview, Khan claimed that the coronavirus will devastate the economies of developing nations, and as a result richer economies must write off the debts of the world’s poorer countries which includes Pakistan.

Khan incidentally was absent from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) video conference meeting between the heads of states, aimed at combating coronavirus.

With 90 new coronavirus cases confirmed in the last 24 hours, the number of COVID-19 cases in Pakistan surged to 184.

The spike in cases was attributed to the inflow of people from Taftan camp, a border town in southwestern Balochistan province, where Pakistan quarantined hundreds of pilgrims who returned from Iran.

According to reports, thousands of people quarantined were not adequately screened for coronavirus or treated for existing conditions. Several people complained of squalid living conditions at the quarantine facility.
