A 12-year-old schoolgirl and a man was killed in a stabbing rampage by a knife-wielding attacker outside Japanese capital Tokyo on Tuesday (28 May), reports Times of India. More than a dozen people including several children were also injured in the attack.

The mass stabbing took place in the Kawasaki town, south of the Japanese capital, and was a rare attack in a country with one of the lowest rates of violent crime in the world.

According to the report, deputy director of the Nippon Medical School Musashi Kosugi told that a 12-year-old schoolgirl and a 39-year-old man had succumbed to their injuries.

The suspected attacker, a man in his 50s, also died of his wounds after turning the knife on himself. The Emergency services were reported as saying that at least 16 others had been injured in the attack.

According to a Japan Today report, the incident occurred at around 7.40am (Japanese Time) on a street near a park in a residential area, about 250 meters from Noborito Station on East Japan Railway Company’s Nambu Line and Odakyu Electric Railway Company’s Odakyu Odawara Line.

As per the eyewitnesses, the suspect slowly approached the children and was shouting "I'm gonna kill you" during the rampage. He had close-cropped hair and was wearing glasses.

The local police is yet to ascertain the motive of the attacker behind the attack.
