Security forces and medical staff arrive outside the Michigan airport.
A police officer at Michigan’s Bishop International Airport was stabbed in the back and neck on Wednesday in an attack that is being investigated as an act of terror.
The attack took place at 9:45 am local time. Security officer, identified as Lieutenant Jeff Neville, is now in stable condition, local authorities have said. The suspect, who was taken into custody after the incident, was identified as Amor Ftouhi, 50, a Canadian man, who legally entered the US on 16 June.
"He spent a little time in the restroom, dropped both bags and came out, pulled out a knife, yelled Allahu Akbar and stabbed Lieutenant Neville repeatedly in the neck," an officer investigating the alleged terror attack informed local media, adding that the knife was roughly 12-inch long and had an 8-inch serrated blade.
The investigating officer said the attacker made a statement to the effect of “you killed people in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan,” and, “we're all going to die".
All passengers are safe and were evacuated, the airport said on Facebook. The airport is closed until further notice. The FBI, along with local, state and federal law agencies is investigating this incident to determine the nature of the attack.
A spokesperson for the Canadian Embassy has said the its government and law enforcement agencies in the country are "engaged and are cooperating fully" with their American counterparts in investigations.
