Indian tennis legend Leander Paes said the grandeur of Durga Puja should be marketed globally to make the event as big as the Rio Carnival of Brazil.
“Durga Puja is global celebration in my opinion. I was in New York for the US Open and visited the Indian Embassy, quite a few people who work there are Bengalis. They were all missing Kolkata and were desperate to come back here just for a few days,” the 18-time Grand Slam winner said.
Paes said the need is to put more emphasis on marketing it because Kolkata is globally well-known.
“...I think it’s a global celebration. Bengalis should go out around the world and celebrate big, globally …as the Bengalis living in other parts of the world become a part of it,” he said.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
