Sweden is resuming an investigation into rape allegation against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange and will seek his extradition from Britain, reports Hindustan Times. Assange is currently in a British prison after being sentenced to 50 weeks behind bars last month for jumping bail when he took refuge in the Ecuadorian embassy in 2012.
According to the report, Sweden’s state prosecutor Eva-Marie Persson on Monday (13 May) said that she would continue and conclude a preliminary investigation into rape allegation against Assange that was dropped in 2017 without charges being brought as he had taken refuge in the Ecuadorean embassy in London.
Office of the Swedish prosecutor said it would also request Assange be detained in his absence on probable cause for a rape allegation and that it would issue a European Arrest Warrant - process under which his extradition would be sought.
However, the United States has also sought extradition of Assange on charges relating to the public release by Wikileaks of a huge cache of secret documents.
