Bharatiya Janata Party, which has been vocal about opposing the celebrations of Tipu Jayanti in Karnataka, has protested in the Legislative Council, asking the government to immediately reply to a motion calling for the celebrations to be dropped.

On Thursday (13 December), the House, owing to the protests, was adjourned thrice. The protest receded after Jayamala said they will soon be providing a reply. On Wednesday (12 December), BJP MLC M P Sunil Subramanya called for a motion that discussed how the government was engaged in disrupting peace and hurting the sentiments of Kodavas by celebrating Tipu Sultan.

Finally, intervening in the matter, Council Chairman Prathap Chandra Shetty said the Chief Minister had sought two weeks to reply to the matter at hand. The BJP, however, sought a reply by the end of the day.

Rural Development, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Krishna Byre Gowda accused the BJP of sidelining burning issues such as drought and the economic growth of the northern part of the state, Deccan Herald reported. He added that the BJP hadn’t learned their lessons despite losing elections in all five states.
