Australia is all set for drone delivery with the first commercial services starting operations in 2019, reported The Tribune.

The commercial delivery services in Australian Capital Territory (ACT) was announced by Wing, a subsidiary of Google’s parent company Alphabet, on Thursday (15 November) in 2019, reported Xinhua news agency.

The drones can clock 125 km per hour and would deliver small packages, including cups of coffee, to homes within a 5 km radius of the company’s base in Mitchell in the northern suburbs of Canberra.

The 12-rotor drones are designed to guarantee safety and weigh 4.5 kg each and handle packages weighing up to 1.5 kg, James Ryan Burgess, CEO of Wing, confirmed. Operators on-the-ground would control multiple drones simultaneously.

State-of-the-art automation makes it possible for drones to take a safe path and ensure their own safety.

"The aircraft could automatically identify anomalies and take corrective action before even a human could react and can execute safe contingency actions,” Burgess told the media.

Reports suggest that the Civil Aviation Safety authority has worked with Wing to ensure safety and would use the trial results in drafting drone regulations in future.
