Your Each Step Can Now Generate Seven Watts: Intel Sets Up Its Unique ‘Walking Power Project’ In Bengaluru 

Intel India has installed energy harvesting tiles that generate electricity every time its employees walk on it, as reported by Deccan Herald (DH). This walkway has been set up the at newly opened design house, “SRR4” in Intel’s Sarjapur (Bengaluru) campus.

“The flooring technology will convert the kinetic energy of visitors' footsteps into off-grid energy and data. It is part of our initiative to conserve energy and be a responsible company,” said an Intel executive to DH.

The walkway that measures around 7.7 sq metres is expected to light bright LED display at the entrance of the building. It will produce seven watts of continuous energy with every footstep made on it. “The energy produced will be displayed on an intuitive dashboard with responsive graphics that create an interactive experience to users and customers,” the executive added.

The walkway works on the Piezoelectric Effect. Certain materials can generate an electric field when some form of mechanical stress is applied to them. Though such energy-harvesting materials are used in wide-ranging products like wrist watches and audio devices, California (USA) is experimenting with using this technology to turn vibrations produced by cars and trucks to power streetlights.
