Nepal has settled at least 20 Rohingya families in its Rupandehi district which is along the country’s border with India, a report in Hindi daily Live Hindustan says.
According to the report, some Rohingyas had moved to Nepal’s Kathmandu from India after which the authorities in the Himalayan nation have moved some of these families to areas along the border with India. This has alarmed Indian agencies, which are monitoring the movement of Rohingyas in the region.
This report comes soon after a report in Zee News said the intelligence agencies have reported to the Union Home Ministry that Rohingya Muslims living in India have started to migrate to Nepal. The report also mentions that Islamic organisations of Nepal are funding the settling of the Rohingyas in Nepal.
According to a detailed Zee News report, a senior official from the ministry has stated that there is an urgent need to keep a close watch on the movement of such Rohingyas.
The report mentions that 378 Rohingyas have moved to Nepal. Some of them are in touch with real estate brokers to buy land in Nepal. The matter is of concern to India.
Zee News report says:
An intelligence agency officer told Zee News that Rohingyas planning to migrate to Nepal are in touch with Rohingyas already settled in Nepal and have even paid bribes amounting to thousands of rupees to secure citizenship documents in Nepal. They have also paid between Rs 4,000 to 50,000 to the brokers to settle in Nepal...(sic)
A news report from December 2019 on this website states that the entry of the Rohingyas refugees in Nepal is a cause of concern.
According to the report, Rohingya refugees were residing on the outskirts of the Kathmandu Valley in rented accommodations.
In the same report, Rohingya refugees told the daily: “Bangladesh wants to send us back to Myanmar. India treats us like terrorists. Nepal is the only country where we feel safe.”
The Zee report mentions there are at least 35 temporary shelters in Dhading district of Nepal. The shelters have sprung up in the last few days. Lanstoor and Panauti are other places where they have settled as mentioned in the report.
