Muslim Men Who Alleged Assault And Claimed Facing Religious Slurs Made 'Exaggerated' Claims: Gurugram Police

Gurugram (PTI) Two Muslim men, who had accused two unidentified people of robbing them of their mobile phones after beating them up and hurling religious slurs at them, are suspected of having made “exaggerated” claims in their complaints.

Police on Monday had said Bihar native Abdur Rehman and his friend Mohammad Azam had lodged a complaint that the assailants had also talked of feeding them pigs and forced one of them to eat some white powder.

But in a swift investigation after lodging an FIR at Sector 40 police station of the city, police managed to identify the alleged assailants, Rahul and Praveen Saini, residents of Kanhai village in Gurugram and nabbed them.

During the questioning, they denied snatching the mobile phones or taking away the motorcycle as alleged by the victims, police said.

While the motorcycle was found parked near the site of the incident, the mobile phones too were recovered from a friend, identified as Rauf, of the two victims, the police said.

“Preliminary investigation hints at victims exaggerating the incident. There was no snatching in the case,” Assistant Commissioner of Police (Sadar) Aman Yadav said, suspecting that the allegation of religious slur too may be false.

“We are still probing the incident,” he said.

In their complaint, Rehman and Azam had alleged that the incident had taken place near Ramada Hotel in sector 45 here where they had briefly stopped while going to Chakkarpur on their motorcycle after collecting some donations for a madrasa.

ACP Yadav had said after the alleged incident a case was registered at the Sector 40 police station and the police were also able to identify one of the accused.

He said the victims had alleged that as they stopped near the hotel, a man came in his car and asked them as to what were they doing there.

As they told him that they had just stopped on their way back to their home, he called some other man and the two began abusing and thrashing them, making religious slurs, Yadav had said, quoting from the complaint.

One of the assailants had allegedly took out some white powder from his car and put it in Azam’s mouth, the ACP had said, adding they fled the scene allegedly after snatching their mobile phones and the motorcycle.

The motorcycle, however, was found parked at a nearby place, the ACP said.

On the victims’ complaint, an FIR under sections 323 (causing hurt), 379 B (robbery), 295 A (malicious intention of outraging religious feelings), 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at Sector 40 police station.
