Recognising the need to take rural India online, the United Progressive Alliance government launched an initiative to provide 100 Mbps broadband connectivity to all the gram panchayats in the country. Unfortunately, not much got done.

Since they came to power in 2014, the National Democratic Alliance government has carried on the work, albeit under a different name, and made significant advances.
