Steeped In Heritage: Masroor Rock-Cut Temples Of Himachal Pradesh

ByIndica Pictures

The Masroor temple is a rock-cut complex of the eighth century located in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh. Dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, Devi and Saura traditions of Hinduism, it is carved out of a sandstone monolithic rock. The temple complex features reliefs of major vedic and puranic gods and goddesses along with floral motifs decorating the columns.

Much of the temple’s sculpture and reliefs have been lost to earthquakes, but its architecture is a tribute to the artistry of unnamed artists who crafted this heritage for our country.
