Swarajya Spec: India’s March Towards Electric Mobility Continues To Gain Steam

BySwarajya Videos

Transcript:

The Union government has been clear from the get-go in its intent to push for the adoption and manufacturing of electric vehicles in the country. Recently, the Cabinet approved a plan which proposed a budget of Rs 10,000 crore for that purpose as part of the second phase.

Besides incentives being announced for the purchase of electric vehicles, we will also see necessary infrastructure being developed in the future, such as at least one charging station in a 3x3 km grid, and at an interval of about 25 km on highways.

All this points to the fact that the government is sincere in its pursuit of electric mobility, and is ready to provide all the necessary resources. This has made the industry happy as well.

One of the key points to note here is the emphasis on localisation. This is the right way to go as it will spur domestic production and, as a result, create employment opportunities. However, there is a need to figure out how to build the necessary charging infrastructure. This is a challenge that countries around the world are grappling with.

In her report for Swarajya, columnist Swati Kamal dives into this matter at length. Make sure to catch that story.
